EU Entry/Exit System becomes fully operational at Italian borders

Italy has begun fully operating the EU Entry/Exit System at its borders, marking a major shift in how non-EU travelers are checked when entering and leaving the Schengen area. The new digital system is designed to replace manual passport stamping with biometric registration, helping authorities track short-stay visits more accurately under the familiar 90 180 rule for visa-free travel.
The rollout, which took effect on 2026-05-21, means border officers will now record the time and place of entry and exit, along with fingerprints and facial images for applicable travelers. Officials say the change should improve security, reduce overstays, and make it easier to enforce the 90 180 limit that governs how long many visitors can remain in the Schengen zone.
Travelers heading to Italy are being advised to allow extra time at border crossings as the system settles in. While the transition may mean slightly longer checks at first, EU officials say the Entry/Exit System will eventually streamline travel and provide a more reliable way to manage border movements across the bloc.
