FCDO Issues New Travel Warning Regarding Upcoming EU Border Checks

The UK Foreign Office has alerted British travellers to significant changes in Schengen border procedures ahead of the EU Entry/Exit System's (EES) launch on 10 April.www.visahq.com In a 9 March update, the FCDO warned that trial biometric checks are already underway across multiple Schengen countries, including Switzerland, Germany, and four other member states. Passengers arriving by air or land are being asked to provide fingerprint and facial-scan enrolment, with some airports experiencing queues of up to 45 minutes as a result.
The new system will fundamentally change how British visitors manage their time in the Schengen zone. The FCDO has reminded frequent travellers that the EES will automatically track days spent in-zone, effectively closing the '90/180' visa-run loophole that previously allowed visitors to reset their stay duration. Travellers are urged to ensure their passports have at least three months' validity beyond their intended exit date to avoid complications at the border. Airlines have also been warned that they could face fines for boarding passengers who will overstay once the system becomes operational.
Business travel managers are advised to prepare for extended processing times, particularly during peak travel periods such as Easter. The FCDO warning comes alongside the UK's own Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) enforcement, meaning that by mid-2026 most cross-Channel trips will require dual digital permissions. Travellers are encouraged to allow extra connection buffers and seek up-to-date guidance on the intersection between EES requirements and Schengen visa rules as the April deadline approaches.
